Hi everyone!
Very soon I will be scanning my first ever slide film (yes, yes!) but was wondering what resolution and type of image (TIF or JPEG) should I use for, say:
1) A 4x6 print so that I don't miss out on updating my photo album.
2) For a web upload and sharing with friends.
Thanks!
If you intend to keep the scan for archival
purposes, scan it at the highest resolution
available.

For print output, you need 300dpi.
For monitor output, you need 70-100 dpi.

Calculate from the size of your film.
For example, if you are going to crop out
a 0.5 in by 0.75 inch section of your slide
and enlarge it to 4x6, you will need to
scan at at least (4 / .5) * 300dpi = 2400 dpi
in order to achieve that result.

For full frame (1x1.5 in), it would be
(4 / 1) * 300 = 1200 dpi.

Most photo software allows you to both
"downsample" and to "resize", getting whatever
you want so long as you start with enough.
They'll allow you to "upsample" too, by
generating more than you start with, but
at a cost of lowered quality.
