Hi Ben,

1. You should have crop lines that you can left click/drag using your mouse to crop the area you wish to scan.

2. It depends on the scanner, but I would advise scanning one at a time.

3. I would use Elements to import the images--go to: File>Import>Epson----This will bring in your Epson software plug-in into Elements.
I would not use the feature in XP. Using an image editor is much better.

1. How does my scanner work, does it know to only scan the area of the picture & not the whole plate?

2. Can I scan a few photos at once but have them saved in seperate files?

3. What is the best way to scan, using Adobe Photoshop elements or using my manufacturers (Epson) software or using Windows XP & just scanning into a file & work from there?

Ben,
If your scanning software will do pre-scan adjustments (curves, contrast adj., color adj., etc.), it may be better to work on the pre-scan image as much as you can with the Epson software before importing it into Elements.

Hi Ben,
Epson probably has a updated driver you can download from their web site for XP. That is probably part of the problem.

Also, Epson's software is usually intended to be used a a plug-in to an imaging program, or as a "twain driver".

There must have been some kind of imaging program included with your Epson scanner such as Photoshop Elements or Photoshop 5 LE. Try installing it and use it to do your scans.I do not recommend that you use XP's imaging capability to scan, especially if/since it requires you to name a format prior to scanning.

Once you have the imaging software and the Epson software installed, open the imaging software program and:
Go to File>Import>Epson Scanner.
It may also ask you to chose:
File>Import>Twain>Epson Scanner.

Make certain carriage is freed from transport mode.
Check instructions with the scanner. Often, software (thinking Twain Driver) must be installed before scanner is connected to the system. Check install notes. This means installing s/w, shut down system, install scanner (attach USB cable), apply ac power to scanner and let it stabilize (usually an indicator light will go red to green or a blinking one becomes steady), then power on the system. The install new hardware wizard should appear.

If you have done a previous installation that was not successful you will probably have to uninstall the existing software using either its own uninstall module or the Windows one (Control Panel / Add-Remove Programs). Trying to reinstall over whatever exists has not been successful for me.

If you installed the 3rd party software (image editor) usually it also needs to be made aware of the scanner's presence. Th method varies with the s/w but I would start the app and under the File menu look for Import, or Acquire, etc. One of these will list the scanner or the TWAIN driver and then you click on it to make the app ''scanner aware''.
