Unless of course, someone can get me a good deal on a Canon EOS 1D.

Hello,

Good! That means I'll have a larger slice of the digital imaging pie. By the way...let me know if you find a good deal on the 1D, I'd like to have one too.

Hello,

For me, it's until either:

1. I can afford a full-frame D-SLR (like the proposed Contax N1, or Pentax MZ-D), or

2. A whole new, high-quality lens system (comparable, to, say, Nikon, Canon, Minolta, etc.) is built so that all focal ranges (wideangles too) are covered for cameras with smaller digital chips.

And of course even a D-SLR of any kind in my price range is out of reach.

Regards,
The Olympus E-10/E-20 cameras are probably perfect for what you need. Oly makes good glass, there's a close-up attachment, and it's an SLR so what you see is what you get.

If you want a serious digital SLR with interchangable lenses, wait a couple of years for the Foveon (sp?) chip to improve and find its way into a 35mm or medium format body. Right now there's a 14 megapixel back for some 6x4.5 cameras that may do but there is the irritating focal length multiplier situation.

Get something that'll do the job and then wait for the technology to catch up.

If you knew the price Kodak used to charge for a Canon mount DSLR you would consider an EOS 1D to be a bargain at the present price point.
question circa 1998: Canon mounting Kodak, or Chevy Suburban? /ibb/skins/default/emoticons/eek.gif
