    Where's Page 1

Since Friday night I have been having trouble with the PopPhoto website. I can get to the list of forums with no difficulty, but my ability to access the first page of topics for the Snapshot Cafe, Gear Guide, How To and Respond to PopPhoto forums is hit-or-miss. Today I have been unable to see the list of recent topics for any of these forums, but I was able to see Page 2 of the How To. All I get is the PopPhoto logo, ad for another HFM publication, and the line with Popular Photography Forums>>Snapshot Cafe (etc.). Yesterday, using a different browser, I could get only partial lists of topics, the rest being some HTML gibberish instead of the icon in the first column and one black line representing all other topics on the page where the titles should be. What gives? Am I the only one having this problem? Have I given offense? Is it my paranoia, or is someone trying to tell me something? Waaaaahhhhh!!!!!

Well, it's a week later and it's not my paranoia or somebody trying to tell me something. The problems persist. I have one ISP and two browsers. Since I am having problems with both browsers when accessing this website and I am having problems with neither browser when accessing any other website, I have to conclude that the problem is with PopPhoto's site.

Today, minutes ago, using first Netscape Communicator and then Internet Explorer I went to the Snapshot Cafe and tried to see the replies that have been posted to the thread "Instant Gratification" since last night. I have posted twice to that thread and cannot access my answers, let alone those that have come after my last. The best that I have done all day is to get Chris Crawford's (member #3114) first post, the 11th in the thread, and that only partially. The full text of the last paragraph as it shows up on my screen is "Where I live, one is right lucky to make 30K a year. It's laughable to look through the job ads in the paper here and find every job re". Clicking on the "Refresh" icon results in fewer posts being visible.

I don't know what you fixed the last time that you revised the programming of the site, but you have certainly made my participation in it much more difficult. Please help! Please undo the damage that has been done.

Well it doesn't seem as though anyone else is having problems with this site so I can only conclude it must be something on your end though I am not a techie type...

    Anton.

It's your ISP. I had the same problem when I had Coqui net, the internet service provided by the local telephone company.

Almost always, I would never get the entire page. I would get maybe three to five of the first posts's, then it would stop.

I thought that was from popphoto since.

I have since switched to AOL and that has not happened once. Not even a teeny bit.

I have reused the old ISP just to see what's going on and it still does it. Sometimes it works OK, most of the time, it does what you describe.

It's not PopPhoto or your browsers.

I pay $13.46 month for my AOL and getting far better service than with the other one at $19.95 per month.

You may have to change ISP.

For what it's worth, I am having no problems at all. I use BellSouth (local phone company) for a DSL connection.

Good luck Anton, we love your input here and it's a shame you are having difficulties. I support ''loco's theory, though. The problem is almost surely on you end.

    Again, good luck...

Maybe the people who number the lines are the same ones who leave numbers completely off most of the pages in back of PP.

If you're on a dial-up connection, try Earthlink. I've used them since 1997 and never had a problem.

AOL is a waste of time, they pretend to be the Internet but they are really a proprietary nertwork that can get you onto the Internet but many sites will not work well with their system.

Just observation of many people's connections over the years that I worked as a computer tech.

Anton, it looks like this problem is solely with your system or ISP. First, try to resolve the problem with the ISP customer service. See if they have had any similar complaints.

Also, try clearing the forum cookies from the "My Profile" section. Sometimes this can help this kind of problem.

Good luck. It's nice to see you around again. BTW... how is the new job going?

Three or four months ago Time magazine had an article essentially sobbing that AOL's buyout of Time Inc. wasn't working out so tremendously as they originally hoped.

In the course of the article it mentioned TWICE that at $24.95 a month for AOL subscription, 40% (yes FORTY) of the take was PROFIT for the company. That's a high margin in anybody's book.

When I bought my computer, three months worth of AOL came with it. I quickly found out that they had no local phone number, and I instantly dropped it for another ISP. They have been bugging me ever since to come back. No, thanks.
