Hi,
I was looking to build for some horizontal flash holders for my flash set.
Advantages:
Can be easily used with brollys.
Much more stable when mounting your flash on top of a trigger and only then attaching it to a studio light stand.
Get more even lighting using umbrellas and similar light modifiers.
Here is how it looks:

I'll be happy for comments here and on my site too!

Good Idea. what about just drilling and tapping the bar and using a 1/4-20 stud? two parts instead of three.
maybe some silicone rubber for the pad and self gripping velcro? (I'm not a fan of rubber bands for holding brealkable stuff)
Mischance nothing, thus idle woe...
Photography is not about how much camera you bring to the shoot.
In the post on my site I mentioned the option to use velcro to attach the flash, I acctually found something that will be great for such uses -
Bicycle Pants Velcro Band Leg Strap - sells for 2$ for a pair,
but I like the rubber bands better , still looking for better rubber bands (if you know of better rubber bands selling on eBay I'd be happy to see that)
Not entirely seeing all your advantages here. I get that it may be more stable than mounting via the shoe. But I don't get the more even light idea. That doesn't make a great deal of sense to me. I think the velcro straps would be preferable to velcro strips on the flash and the plate. Both from an aesthetics and stability standpoint.
Life is too short to bother with the criminally inane.

Bob, when the flash is mounted to a shoe style optical slave, and then mounted to the umbrella bracket, the centerline of the flash is moved well off the centerline of the umbrella.
Not too big a problem with a shoot through, but it can do funny things to the light path for a reflector.
There are several commercial solutions for the same problem.
I kind of like this because it might let you optimize the distance of the flash from the apex of the umbrella.(sort of like a focusing flashlight)
What about "Bongo Bytes" insted of wrapped elestics?

Yeah, that I understand. There was no mention of an optical slave. Does anybody still use those? With radio triggers and flashes with built-in slaves and wireless capability, those optical slaves are sort of like Dodo birds.

Hi Bob,
Here are some quick photos I took with a more simple horizontal flash holder (rubber bands + small flash hotshoe light stand):
