    Sigma 17-50 2.8

    Hello Everyone,

Just curious as to what the opinions are of the group here- I have a chance to pick up a Sigma 17-50 2.8 for around $450 from a 2nd owner... will be used mainly at work and some general photo work.

    What say you???

    Thanks alot!!

It goes for about $620 before tax new, so you can save a bit of dough. However, it's worth checking the focus on it before you buy in my opinion. Sigma lenses are awesome, but they can have issues with backfocusing/frontfocusing when they come from the factory. If you have to send it to be serviced, your savings will go out the window.

It's a tempting price, but I'm leary about buying anything used except from a reliable source and with a warranty. As Stan said, if anything is wrong with it your savings are gone and it could end up costing even more.

I wouldn't buy it unless you can test it very carefully prior to buying it. 17-50 OS is a nice lens, but Sigma is know for some problems with BF/FF (not a big problem - they might be calibrated) and centering issues (that are impossible to calibrate and very hard to repair).

I have this lens. On my second outing with the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 OS (on a Nikon D300), it experienced an AF hunting problem. I had to shoot the rest of the day on MF. I contacted Sigma and they told me to send it in. When I got it back, it performed (and still does) flawlessly. It is very sharp and handles well.
