You are at a dance. As with most dances, they are not well lit affairs. So, you get close and use a flash? How does this preserve the ambiance and spirit of the event. I would think an up close flash shot would be the "deer in the headlights" shot I alluded to before. And from my experience, if you use your flash only as fill in a situation like this, your shutter is going to be so slow you will have ghosting in the shot.

Although you cannot post any of your shots, maybe you can look at the metadata and list some specific settings on some of your shots so we can get a feel for where they are at.

Thanks,

Scott
i sorry not all are up close up in your face shots. there are people in the back round. some are dancing i get a lot of line dances. these kids dance in circles and you see a lot of thier backs i dont shoot backs. 30 of a second at 5.6 is a good choice. at 400 ISO 30 of a second at f.8 set at 10 feet will work also. i have a TAMRON 2.8-.4 lens i use alot for dances.i dont get ghosting i do get good shots and no complants from the schools or at work. i do edit all my shots. on the side i also do weddings i do shoot yearbook photos you are right.

Scott, apparently he shoots for a yearbook company.
If that is the case, "atmosphere" is secondary to being able to recognize the subjects.

so we have a third option to deal with, it's not the photographer or the equipment, it's the intended use!

I kind of figured that, but since he never stated that is what he was working for, I didn't want to assume. So, you're right, the intended use is an important factor.
