Default Retrieving fully rewound film

Hi all

While some genius cameras have the wonderful ability to midroll rewind and leave the film leader out, some

cheaper cameras don't. As you may have guessed I have one of those. It does however allow midroll rewind, but all the way. Question is how do you get the leader out again without letting light in or damaging the emulsion. Whats the quickest easiest way to do it.

Thanks

The magic tool you need is called a film leader retriever they are available at most photo stores or from the online dealers like B&H Photo.

You can also take the film to the local 1-hour emporium. THey can have the machine suck the leader out of the canister by some sort of mechanical magic. A film leader retriever does take a bit of fiddling but would be far faster than a trip to the photo store.

if you hold the film in your hand wind it a few times back toward yourself..then using some stiff tape stick it in the slot and retreive the leader..aka..leader puller. tape...we use it on our film extractors//

Try using a piece of label-maker tape (Dymo for example). Peel off the film over the sticky side exposing about 3/4 inch or so. Then slip the exposed end into the cartridge through the felt lips, sticky side towards the centre. Keep the tape to the end of the slot where the film leader comes out of. Using your fingers, wind the spool in the same direction as when the film is being advanced. This will "expand " the roll inside the cartridge and push it up against the adhesive on the tape. Then slowly, pull the tape out and the leader should appear. Don't get frustrated if it doesn't work the first time, sometimes you have to fiddle with it a bit.I've been using this method for 20 years, and it has never failedto retrieve the leader.

Porter's sells a retriever do-dad that works well.

Here in Mexico most 1 hour places are willing to get the leader out but having your own retriever will save time and trips to the drugstore.

the more you handle film the greater the chance to mess it up!
