Has anyone else run into a problem with the card reader in this printer reformatting the CF card? I have a customer who's printer reformats his CF card every time he inserts a card into the reader. He lost all his pictures from a family vacation.
HP is replacing his printer (only 2 months old) but he is understandbly sceptical about this printer, and indeed HP as a whole. The 800 number treated him very shoddily also. It would be interesting to hear if this is a problem with this printer, or any of the other printers with built-in card reading capability. Thanks |

Are you sure it's formatting the card and not just moving the files onto the hard drive. I've seen a lot of people that have no idea how to find a file on their hard drive. Hopefully the vacation pictures are on his hard drive. See if he knows how to search his hard drive using *.jpg and or *.tif

I have been selling those printers for a long time and have never heard of that happening. (However, it's always possible) I would agree with Mike T that they may have been copied to the hard drive, however the person should have noticed that excessive amount of time it would have taking that particular printer to copy them to the hard drive.

Sorry guys - already thought of that. The printer isn't even attached to a computer. The thing is just plain defective. I watched it screw up 3 cards myself this morning. One card was almost impossible to resurrect. Took 5 tries.
I use Epson printers for photo work, and an ancient, but reliable Canon Bubble Jet for text. My opinion of HP has always been that they have been an extremely reliable printer (even if the resolution was less than I demand for photo work). I am surprised, and having never heard of this problem myself - thought I'd throw it open. HP, needless to say, have left a very bad taste in my customer's mouth. I was at his place of work to see the "screw up" in action, and also to install and test a Canon S820D for him. I do like the see-through inktanks on the Canon, and preliminary prints look pretty darned good. |

Forgot to mention:
I know the cards were being reformatted (or losing their formatting, to be more precise) because the digital camera said so. So I tried the cards in different digital cameras. Nikon Coolpix 5000 very obligingly asked if I would like it to format the card. Two computers with CF card readers attached to them (separate and discreet units) both told me that the cards were unformatted. Funnily enough - in a Canon digicam (S100) the cards read "card full" in capture mode, but unformatted in playback mode. |
